Building a Bird Feeder
Items needed: egg carton; birdseed; twine—four pieces about 24 inches long
Make a bird feeder. Rip the top off an egg carton. Punch a hole in each corner of the bottom part. Thread a piece of twine through each hole, gather at the top, and knot them together. Let the kids decorate it, if they like. Add birdseed, hang near a window or tree, and watch the birds.
Read Luke 12:22-24.
God takes care of the birds. We can trust Him to care for us!

As you are watching TV with your kids, talk about the commercials and the desire for more things.
Some questions to ask:
- What do advertisers want you to do? (buy their product)
- When you see an ad on television or in a magazine, does it make you want to buy it?
- Do the advertisements live up to their promises?
- Have you ever purchased something that didn’t live up to its advertising? Is it possible to have too many things?
- Does buying things make you happy?
- What do you really need to be happy?
Students using D6 Curriculum learned about a man who wanted more and more things, but was unwilling to share with God or others. (Luke 12:15-21) Life is more than getting stuff; life is about putting God and His kingdom first. Things will never bring us the happiness we want; trusting in God is the only way to have lasting joy!
Trusting in Jesus
Bake a loaf of bread and talk about the new Bible verse students using D6 Curriculum began learning—John 6:35. (Jesus said, “I am the bread of life…”)
There are many recipes (with pictures) online or go to: http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-Bread-Recipe/, for an easy recipe.
As you are eating the bread (with some yummy butter), talk about why Jesus said what He did.
What does bread and drink do for you? (Satisfies your hunger and thirst; provides what your body needs; keeps you alive; etc.)
Just as food and drink satisfy our physical cravings, Jesus can provide all we need to be satisfied. We don’t have to fill our emptiness with things. Trusting in Jesus can bring us true joy.
How can you trust in Jesus and not other things? (What you think about, the way you spend your time and money are good ways to see what you are trusting in. Do you think more about getting things or giving to others? Do you spend time dreaming about what you will buy next or do you serve God and others? It’s not wrong to have things, but things should never be FIRST in our lives. Put God first and He will see that we have all we need.)
Say the verse every night at dinner.
