Splink | Submission to the Spirit

Students learned about submitting to the Spirit – specifically, submitting to parents. Switch roles for an evening (or period of time) to help everyone see what it’s like to ‘walk in another’s shoes’. For example: Let the ‘kids’ supervise bedtime, let the ‘parents’ do what the kids normally do.

What was the hardest part of being a parent/kid?

Why do parents want kids to obey? (They want to protect the kids; they want to guide them in the correct way; etc.)

Why is hard for kids to obey? (They want to do what they want; they don’t always listen; they are stubborn; etc.)

God gave us parents to protect and guide us. When we obey our parents, we are obeying God.

Ding, Ding, Ding

Students also learned about the fruit of the Spirit, gentleness/kindness. Every time you see a family member speaking or acting in a gentle or kind manner, ring a bell. Point out to the rest of the family the specific way that person showed kindness. (Marissa helped her sister find her shoes! What a kind thing to do!)

*** If you don’t have a bell, just say (loudly) Ding, ding, ding! Adapt these ideas to what you have and what fits your schedule and family.

A Kind Idea

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Brainstorm ways that your family can show kindness.

A few ideas:

  • Treat their family to dinner at a restaurant or at your house
  • Deliver a basket of goodies, ring the doorbell and run
  • Write notes (or draw pictures) of thanks, telling what you like
  • Give a gift certificate
  • Post your words of praise on Facebook
