Pretend OR Real

Write some actions on slips of paper and act them out (without using words).

Some ideas to get you started:

Pretend that you are:

  • Walking through a giant tub of Cool Whip
  • Riding your favorite ride at an amusement park
  • Washing the dog
  • Eating an ice cream cone
  • Laughing at a movie
  • Sliding on a slip and slide in the backyard
  • Playing basketball
  • Catching a runaway snake

Was it harder to act out the actions or to guess the actions?

These actions gave us clues to help us guess what you were doing.

What do our actions tell others about us? (what kind of person we are; what we are really like; etc.)

Read James 2:14-18.

Our actions can tell others if we are a true Christian or if we are just pretending. God sends His Holy Spirit to live inside us to slowly change us to look more like Jesus. Others should be able to tell by our actions if we are part of God’s family.

What? That’s not…

Items Needed: two nearly identical cans (vegetables or fruits)

When the kids aren’t looking, carefully swap the labels on the cans. Ask them to help you prepare a meal or snack. Put the cans on the kitchen counter and ask them to pick which one they want. Open the can to reveal its contents.

Were you surprised to find ___________ inside? Why? (it said something different on the label)

We expect that the outside of the can should match the inside. If we say that we have faith in Jesus, our actions should match our words.

Says Who?

Be Real

Send kids on a hunt to find something real and something fake (real flower and a fake one; a real piece of fruit and plastic one; a real dollar bill and a fake one drawn on a piece of paper, etc.)

Which would you rather have – the fake or the real one? Why?

Paul told Titus (a young preacher) to have real faith! People who know God show it by the words they say and the things they do. (Titus 1:16)
