Shoe Scramble
Play shoe scramble. Have kids put their shoes in a pile on one side of the room. At the signal to "go" they must run to the pile, find their shoes, and put them on. First one to get both shoes on is the winner. (Little ones may need additional help.)
Ask:
What does the phrase, "Walk a mile in someone else's shoes" mean? (Put yourself in their situation; try to understand what the other person is feeling)
How can we comfort others who are suffering? (With kind words, with loving actions, think of what has helped you and do that for them)
What would you want someone to do if . . .
- you fell down and scraped your knee
- you were sick in bed
- your best friend moved away
- your grandma is in the hospital
- your dog dies
- you make a bad grade
- you are lonely
Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
God uses PEOPLE to comfort one another. We can be used by God to comfort and help others in their suffering.

Words Help Heal Wounds
Items needed: box of Band-aids
Buy a box of Band-aids and let the kids put them on all their "boo-boos." (The "character" Band-aids are especially fun!)
Ask:
What makes you feel better when you get hurt?
What words can I say to help you feel better?
What words would make you feel worse? (You deserved it, you are wrong, you are so clumsy, you are stupid, etc.)
What are some kind words that we can say to others when they are hurting? (I'm sorry, I care, how can I help you?)
When Job had all his trouble, his friends said words that made him feel worse, not better! We must be careful to use words that help, not hurt.

Caring Cards
Items needed: construction or white paper
Markers, crayons, pencils
Optional: stickers, glitter, etc.
Think of people you know who might be suffering (in the hospital, alone, sick at home, going through the death of a friend or family member, etc.) and might need some encouraging words. Make a card and write words that help. Mail or deliver the cards. Ask older kids to help the younger ones write their kind messages.
