Are You Connected?
Items needed: A branch with leaves (from a fruit tree or grape vine would be even better)
Break a branch off a tree and bring it into the house. Check the branch each day to see if there is any fruit. (Statements such as: I hope we get some grapes from this vine. How long will it take to get an apple from this tree! ETC.) After a few days and the leaves are withering, ask the kids:
Do you think this branch will produce any fruit? Why or why not?
In order for a branch to produce fruit, it has to be connected.
Read John 15:5. (Jesus said that He is the vine and we are the branches. If we stay connected to Him, we will bear fruit.)
The way for us to have life (spiritual) is through Jesus.
Items needed: Fruit; fruit dip (optional)
Take a trip to the grocery store and allow each one to pick out their favorite fruit. Bring it home and eat it together. (How about eating just fruit for dinner…especially if strawberry shortcake is involved?)
Jesus said if we are connected to Him, we will bear fruit.
What does it mean to bear fruit? That we will be able to grow apples out our ears? No, this fruit are good characteristics that we can have. Just as fruit is good to eat, the fruit we will produce are good things from the Holy Spirit.
Read a list from Galatians 5:22-23 (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control).
The closer we live to Jesus and listen to His Spirit’s instructions, the more good fruit we will produce.
Filled With Love
Share a simple object lesson about being connected to Jesus who can give us what we need to love others.
Ask one of your kids to give an item (something that he or she doesn’t have —a candy bar, an apple, some stickers, etc.) to a sibling. If he says that he can’t, ask, “Why?” Then ask, “Would you be willing to give ________ (the item) to your sibling if I gave you one?” Hand him the item to share with his sibling. (Bring out more for all to share.)
You were able to give _______ because I gave it to you.
Have you ever felt like you didn’t have any love to give someone?
There are times when it is hard to love others and we feel like we can’t do it. But, if we are living close to Jesus, He can give us His love for them. As we think about and are filled with His great love, we can share that love with others.
