Honor God’s Word

Items needed: Pieces of copy or construction paper, markers or crayons, yarn, twine, or string, tape

Make a banner to review the Bible verse, Psalm 34:4, students have been learning.

What did the verse say happened when David sought or looked for the Lord? (The Lord answered Him.) What can the Lord deliver us from? (Our fears)

This is just one verse from the Bible, but the Bible is filled with God’s thoughts and truths about how to live and grow to be more like Jesus. God’s Word is true and deserves our respect. We should read God’s Word every day.

When Ezra read the Word of God to the people of Israel, they stood to show respect for God and His words. How can you show respect to God’s Word this week?

Who Says?

Items Needed: Tape measure, paper, writing utensil

Using a tape measure, ask your children to measure certain items around the room (TV, shoe, refrigerator, book, dog, etc.). After measuring and announcing the length of several items, ask:

What might happen if each of you had a tape measure that had different lengths for an inch? Would you get the same measurements? (Show them how long an inch is on the tape measure.)

Since 1875, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (an organization just outside of Paris) was created to establish standards for weights and measurements around the world. There has to be a standard that tells us what is right (in measurements, money, morality, etc.)

God is the standard for what is right and wrong, and His Word tells us what truth is. We must live according to God’s Word and honor His words through daily Bible reading and striving to live like Jesus lived.

Get the Rules Out

Grab a couple of small balls and two spoons. Announce to the family that you are going to play a game. Then say, “Start.” (When they don’t do anything, ask, “What’s wrong?”) Tell them it’s time to play the game, so start!

If they do come up with a plan and start playing a game, change the rules. (You have to hold the ball between your legs and put the spoon on your head, you have to run around the couch, etc.)

Ask:

Why was it difficult to play this game? (We didn’t know what to do, there were no rules, etc.)

Why are rules good? (They help us know what to do, they help us get along, they can protect us, etc.)

God gave us His Word. He provided us with several rules, but there is so much more in the Bible. God’s Word gives us examples of grace, mercy, and love and provides us with a way to know Jesus more so we can live like Him. God’s Word is a gift to us, and it is worthy of our respect. What habits can you add to your daily routine to honor and live out the words of the Bible?
