Warning!

Items Needed: Hair dryer (with warning label)

Show your child the hair dryer with the warning label. Ask your child if they know what the warning label is. After they respond, read the label to them. (If your hair dryer doesn’t have a warning label, give them the warning: “DANGER! Do not use while in water!”) Ask your child why they think the makers of the hair dryer gave this warning and what might happen if we ignored the warning.

After a brief discussion, explain to your child that the maker of this hair dryer knows a person could get seriously injured or die if he or she used it while in water. Emphasize to your child that God gives us rules too. He knows what is best for us. Even though we don’t always like rules, it is very important to follow them. God gave Moses some rules, called the Ten Commandments, to share with the Israelites. These rules are still important and apply to us today.

Stay Safe!

Walk with your child inside and outside the house pointing out different items or situations that might be dangerous. (oven/stove, curling iron/hair straightener, blow dryer, iron, fireplace, ladder, street, etc.) Ask your child what advice they would give a younger child as you point out each item/situation. If your child is young, ask them how they can be safe as you point out each item/situation.

Explain to your child that you want to protect them, and that is why there are rules in your home. Emphasize to your child that God gives has rules for us too and that He knows what is best for us. Even though we don’t always like rules, it is very important to follow them. God gave Moses some rules, called the Ten Commandments, to share with the Israelites. These rules are still important, and we should still follow them today.

What Rules?

Items Needed: 2 small ball, 2 spoons

Grab a couple of small balls and two spoons. Announce to the family that you are going to play a game. Then say, “Go!” (When they don’t do anything, ask, “What’s wrong?”) Tell them it’s time to play the game, so they need to start playing!

If they do come up with a plan and start playing a game, change the rules. (You have to hold the ball between your legs and put the spoon on your head; you have to run around the couch; etc.)

Ask:

Why was it difficult to play this game? (We didn’t know what to do; there were no rules; etc.)

Why are rules good? (They help us know what to do; they help us get along; they can protect us; etc.)

God gave Moses and His people the Ten Commandments (ten rules) so they would know the best way to live. We should follow God’s rules too!
