True Faith

Items Needed: Ingredients and supplies listed below

Make ice cream to illustrate that actions show we have faith.

Items needed for each person:
1 tablespoon sugar
½ cup milk or half & half
¼ teaspoon vanilla
6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)
1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag
Ice cubes

Show ingredients and ask:
Do you believe these ingredients can become ice cream?

Follow the directions below and instruct each family member to shake the mixture in their bag if they believe ice cream will form.

How to make it:
Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
Fill the large bag half full of ice, add the rock salt, and seal the bag.
Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
Shake until the mixture becomes ice cream (which takes about 5 minutes).
Wipe off the top of the small bag, and then open it carefully. Enjoy!

We showed our belief that what I said was true by shaking the bags. The Bible tells us we show our faith in God by believing what He has said in His Word and then living it out—doing what He has told us to do (James 2:14–17). Actions show we have true faith!

I Spy

Play a few rounds of the game “I Spy” as a family. This activity can be done at home or while riding in the car. After everyone has had a turn to be the “spy,” talk to your child about the story of Rahab.

Remind your children of how Rahab protected the Israelite spies Joshua sent to the city of Jericho. Emphasize how Rahab had heard of God’s power and protection over His people. She had faith in God and showed her faith by protecting the spies from the king’s men.

Count on It!

Items Needed: Jump rope, yarn, red cord, twine, fishing line, etc.

Hide the different types of strings and instruct your child to find them. Be sure to let them know how many they are looking for.

After the activity, discuss the story of Rahab and how she protected the Israelite spies from the king’s men. Remind your child that the Israelites also protected Rahab when they attacked the city of Jericho.

Ask your child:
What did the spies tell Rahab to do for her and her family to remain safe? (hang a red cord from her window)
Did Rahab follow the spies’ instructions? (yes)
Did the Israelites harm Rahab and her family? (no)

Rahab had heard of God’s power and protection over His people. She had faith in God and showed her faith by protecting the spies from the king’s men. In turn, the Israelites did not harm Rahab or her family. We can learn from Rahab’s example to have faith in God and to show that faith in our actions. How can you live out your faith this week?
