How Well Do You Know Jesus?
Talk to your children about how we get to know others. Remind them that learning about people helps us know them better.
Come up with several questions and let your children “interview” you. (You might want to record the interview.)
What was your favorite game?
What did you like best about school?
What is your favorite food?
What were your chores as a child?
What pets did you have?
How did you learn about God?
How did you meet your spouse?
After the interview, ask: How can we get to know Jesus? (By reading the Bible) What do we already know about Jesus? (He is the Creator; He is God; He is eternal; He is the Light of the World; He is loving, helpful, and kind; He is our Savior; He never sinned; He took our punishment for sin by dying on the cross; etc.)
Pray with your children, asking God to help each of you learn more about Him and His Son, Jesus.
Family Portraits
Items Needed: Paper and colored pencils
Instruct everyone to draw a picture of themselves. Then pass the picture to the right and instruct each person to write one good characteristic (kind; strong; helpful; etc.) about that person on the picture. Assist younger children who can’t write. Continue passing the pictures around until each picture is returned to its owner. Read each person’s characteristics out loud.
If we want to know what God is like, we can look at Jesus in the Bible. Jesus tells us in John 14:9 that if we have seen Him, we have seen His Father.
Next, write “Jesus” on a piece of paper and pass the picture around to let each person write a characteristic about Him on the paper (loving; kind; wise; holy; generous; forgiving; etc.) Read them aloud.
All of these are true about God because Jesus is God. He is loving, kind, wise, holy, generous, forgiving, etc. He is to be honored above anyone else!
Display the pictures on the refrigerator—including the one with the good qualities about Jesus. Choose a different characteristic each night as praise to God when you pray at meals.
What Is God Really Like?
Item Needed: Device with internet access
Show your children a few commercials on YouTube. Preview these ahead of time to monitor the ads. After watching the commercials together, ask:
What does the ad tell you about that product? (It looks fun; it tells you where it’s located; it tells you how much it costs; etc.)
What can you tell about God by looking at Jesus? (He is the Creator; He is kind and forgiving; He is wise and powerful; etc.)
In a way, Jesus was a walking, talking, breathing commercial of God. God is invisible, so we can’t see Him, but Jesus came to earth as a man. His life helps us know what His Father is like.
